A rich, Polish tradition of Lent music dates back to 1707 when for the first time in Mariacki Church in Cracow, Gorzkie Zale (literally ‘acute sorrows' - Polish church service) was sung. From that moment on, Lent prayers are accompanied by tuneful chants. A contemporary example of this heritage is the Lent Celebration created by Pawel and Marcin Steczkowscy. The brothers, who for many years sang in a boy choir called ‘Cantus' - led by their father Stanislaw, were closely influenced by sacred music. Now, as adults, they come back to their adolescent fascination, this time however, they play in accordance to their own, modern arrangements. An exquisite selection of songs, magnificent performance, the unprecedented combination of rare instruments with the beauty of human vocals and poetry are the most important factors of this project. Thanks to that, the Lent Celebration is a real musical treat which later on is remembered by the listeners for many years to come.
